PRIMO: A Unique Coffee Table Inspired by Organic Cells

Combining Generative Design and Flexible Manufacturing

Madalin Gheorghe from Studio SIMPLEXIO has created PRIMO, a series of custom coffee tables that combine generative design principles with flexible computer-aided manufacturing systems.

The inspiration for PRIMO comes from the fascination with the intricate and dynamic forms of organic cells seen through a microscope lens. Madalin Gheorghe, the designer, was captivated by the mathematical rules that explain the complexity of these tiny wonders. This fascination led to the creation of a coffee table that embodies the beauty and complexity of organic cells.

What sets PRIMO apart from other coffee tables is its unique geometry, derived from a space-partitioning algorithm called VORONOI. This algorithm deals with the aggregation of matter at cellular levels in nature. By inputting basic mathematical instructions into a computer program, the designer allows the program to generate the form of the table. The result is an intricate and visually stunning piece of furniture that showcases the beauty of organic patterns.

PRIMO's design also offers flexibility and customization. The different parameters of the algorithm allow for an infinite number of iterations, ensuring that each coffee table is unique. Despite the variations, all iterations maintain a unified aesthetic, making PRIMO a cohesive collection.

The realization of PRIMO involves a combination of cutting-edge technologies. The metal sheets used for the table are subjected to CNC laser cutting, followed by folding, welding, and epoxy coating. The glass component of the table is created through CNC water jet cutting, ensuring a perfect fit in a specially designed frame.

PRIMO is not only visually appealing but also functional. Each table is composed of several smaller modules that fit together and are held in place with magnets. These modules can function together as a single table or be separated and used individually, providing versatility for different spaces and needs.

The PRIMO project started in December 2012 and was completed in July 2014. Throughout the design process, Madalin Gheorghe faced the challenge of creating an algorithm that could produce visually attractive products while considering constraints such as cost and fabrication methodology. The result is a coffee table that combines aesthetics, functionality, and affordability.

PRIMO has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the category of Generative, Algorithmic, Parametric, and AI-Assisted Design in 2015. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With PRIMO, Madalin Gheorghe has successfully merged art, mathematics, and technology to create a coffee table that is not only visually stunning but also adaptable to different spaces and needs. Its unique design and manufacturing process make it a standout piece in the world of furniture design.
